At least five people are killed when a Coast Guard Aircraft crashes into a passenger airliner at Haneda airport in Japan.

Although all 379 passengers on Japan Airlines flight JAL-516 are said to have escaped safely, five Japanese Coast Guard service members lost their lives in the crash.

On January 5, a passenger jet crashed into a Japanese coast guard aircraft and caught fire on the Haneda Airport runway in Tokyo, according to officials.

According to NHK TV channel, around 379 passengers on Japan Airlines flight JAL-516 were reportedly able to escape the aircraft safely prior to it completely catching fire. The pilot of their aircraft had fled, according to the Japanese Coast Guard. The five other crew members have been discovered dead, according to NHK TV reporter.

While the Japan Airlines aircraft was taxying on a runway, a significant explosion of smoke and flames could be seen on local TV footage. Then there was a fire in the vicinity of the wing. An hour later, footage revealed the airliner completely on fire.

According to NHK TV, the aircraft was an Airbus A-350 that had traveled to Haneda from Shin Chitose airport, which is close to the city of Sapporo.

Official with the Coast Guard Yoshinori Yanagishima verified that the passenger jet and its flight MA-722, a Bombardier Dash-8, collided.

The entire cabin was filled with smoke within a few minutes, as reported by 17-year-old Anton Deibe of Sweden, who was a passenger on the Japan Airlines aircraft, to the Swedish daily Aftonbladet. We fell to the ground with great abandon. We hurled ourselves at the emergency doors as soon as they were opened.

The cabin's smoke hurt like crazy. It was just horrible. We just dash into the field, without knowing where we are headed. Deibe, who was traveling with his parents and sister, continued, "It was chaos."

According to Kyodo, the coast guard aircraft, which is stationed at Haneda, was scheduled to travel to Niigata in order to provide relief supplies to locals impacted by Monday's devastating earthquake, which left at least 48 people dead.

One of Japan's biggest airports, Haneda sees a lot of traffic over the New Year's holiday.
