There are so many different kinds of manicures available nowadays. Still among the most popular choices, though, are gel and dip powder. Is one better (or safer) than the other in terms of producing a gorgeous, chip-resistant manicure? The key distinctions between gel and dip powder manicures are explained in detail by two famous manicurists here.
Dip powder: What Is It ?
Dip powders are basically acrylic powders, according to famous nail expert Natalie Minerva. Dip powder's longevity, up to four or five weeks, is attributed to its polymers. Elizabeth Hanna, CEO of Nailing Hollywood, argues that dip is the greatest option for someone seeking a long-lasting manicure that strengthens the natural nail.
This is how it operates: The nails are first coated with a base coat and bonding liquid. Next, depending on the desired look, each nail is dipped into the colored powder one or two more times. The nails are then filed and polished. The powder is then sealed and hardened using a liquid sealer. The final action? Applying a top coat will guarantee that the nails are glossy. As an alternative, some nail technicians may cure a clear gel topcoat under an LED or UV lamp to guarantee that the nails dry more quickly.
There's the often discussed hygienic problem with salon dip powder manicures. If several people dip their fingernails into the same powder jar and there are scratches or scrapes on them, the jar might get contaminated and transmit bacteria. "There's a chance of contamination or illness if dirty hands are dipped straight into the dip powder pot.," Hanna says. If your manicurist applies the powder to your nails, you can prevent this, though.
For dip powder nails, the usual cost is between $35 and $50. Based on your location and the level of skill of the nail technician, the final price will change.
What Is Polish Gel ?
Gel nail polish is applied in the same way as regular nail polish—base coat, color, and top coat—but each layer needs to cure for 30 to 60 seconds under a UV or LED light (the majority of salons now use the latter). Minerva describes gel polish as a liquid that resembles resin. "The gel quickly dries and solidifies due to catalysts in it that react to LED and UV light. LED lights, which offer less UV exposure and need considerably less time under the light than traditional UV lamps, are used by the majority of gel nail artists nowadays."
According to Hanna, the reason gel polish is so attractive is that it is more resilient than regular polish, lasting up to three weeks without peeling. The location of the nail shop and the skill level of the nail technician affect the cost of a gel manicure. But be prepared to spend anywhere from $30 to $50 or more.
What's the difference between gel polish and dip powder ?
Application: Unlike gel polish, dip manicures don't require the powder to be hardened using a UV or LED bulb. Rather, let the dip powder air dry in between coats. Each coat of polish in a gel manicure dries in 30 to 60 seconds thanks to the UV or LED bulb.
Appearance: Dip powder contains polymers, which gives it a different look and feel than gel polish. This is the fundamental distinction between the two, according to Minerva. "Dip nails are typically [thicker], and the application process is different because it includes the addition of the polymer."
Versatility: Gel nail polish comes in a greater range of colors and finishes (from sheer to matte). Furthermore, because gel nail paint is a liquid, you may use it to create more elaborate nail art. Conversely, dip powders are often only offered in a limited selection of opaque or glittery tones, and employing powder to create patterns is less flexible.
Removal: Acetone is required for the removal of both gel polish and dip powder. According to Minerva, the procedure entails removing the top coat of powder or gel polish, putting a cotton ball soaked in acetone on the nails, and then covering them with foil. Hanna points out that dip powder is more resilient than gel, though. "This indicates that it is more challenging to remove and that improper application and removal may result in nail damage," she writes.

Deciding between a dip powder manicure or gel paint manicure has no right or wrong answer. It is entirely up to personal opinion which manicure is best for your nails; there is no right or wrong answer. You'll get a shiny, long-lasting manicure with any selection. Your budget, the length of time you want the manicure to endure, and the condition of your nails should all be taken into account. According to Hanna, if you would rather have a manicure without the usage of UV or LED lights, dip powder can be the greatest choice.
Conversely, think about a gel polish manicure if you enjoy wearing elaborate nail art. "Make sure you see a knowledgeable nail artist who can advise what product is best for you and your nails," Hanna cautions.
